Jonathan Bloxham (15 September)
Initially a cellist with a career that included concerto engagements in the UK and Europe, Jonathan Bloxham studied at the Menuhin School before turning to conducting as a student at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Sian Edwards and Michael Seal. His conducting career began in 2016 as Assistant to Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla during her principal conductorship of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He made his Glyndebourne debut in 2021 with Luisa Miller, and holds posts of Chief Conductor/Music Director of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Luzerne Theater and the London Mozart Players, the latter presenting a concert series under his conductorship in the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
In addition to these commitments, conducting engagements have included concerts with the London Philharmonic and Hallé orchestras, the Elbphilharmonie, Salzburg Mozarteum, the BBC Symphony and BBC Philharmonic orchestras. His discography includes Bach keyboard concertos with Tianqi Du and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and works by Bruce Broughton with the London Symphony Orchestra.
He comes to Putney Music fresh from conducting a run of performances at the Luzerne Theater of Britten’s Peter Grimes and, with his partner, as a proud new father of Samuel James Bloxham. Pastimes include cooking and wine making – during Covid he took a sommelier course (‘a good use of time!’) with his friend the violinist Benjamin Baker. This evening, he talks to Andrew Keener.
