MacleodAndrew Marriner (18 November)

As soloist and orchestral player, Andrew Marriner has combined a distinguished career as soloist with one as principal clarinet of the London Symphony Orchestra, a position he has occupied for over thirty years. No less notable was his tenure until 2008 as principal clarinettist of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the orchestra founded by his father Sir Neville Marriner. Not only, however, did his early musical influences derive from the procession of musical luminaries which passed through the family house in the early days of the ASMF, but also from his time as a chorister at King’s College, Cambridge (he sang in the choir during the famous Argo recording of Allegri’s Miserere along with Roy Goodman, the treble soloist whose conducting career lay several decades in the future) and a key member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
With all this he still finds time to serve on several music competition juries, including the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition. He also serves on the advisory committee of the Georg Solti Foundation and is a trustee of the Hattori Foundation.

His discography is extensive, including recordings of the Finzi Concerto with his father conducting the Academy of St Martin the Fields, two recordings of the Mozart Concerto (on EMI, with the London Mozart Players conducted by Jane Glover, and on Philips with his father conducting the ASMF), Howard Blake’s Concerto (again with Sir Neville conducting the ASMF) and John Tavener’s The Repentant Thief (with the LSO conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas) which was written for him.

Hobbies (‘apart from the musician’s usual interest in food and wine’) centre mostly around sport – watching rugby and cricket, a passion inherited from his father (Andrew will have played at his memorial match between a team from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville’s local County Cricket Club in Devon in August). He is a keen wicket keeper (Middlesex League, 2nd Division) and turns out often for the Lord Taverners (‘though I now book an osteopath for each Monday after any weekend game’).
