Ben Rich (19 October)

A familiar weather-forecasting face on BBC Television, Ben Rich combines his professional life with a passion for music (he plays violin in the London Gay Symphony Orchestra), theatre, comedy, cinema and cocktails. Born in Plymouth, he gave classmates and teachers daily handmade cardboard weather forecasts before going on to Southampton University where he obtained a degree in Geography and Environmental Science. He also completed an MA course in Broadcast Journalism at University College, Falmouth. A spell as local newsreader and reporter in Bristol and Manchester followed, and he completed his studies as meteorologist at the Met Office College in Exeter. As well as his television appearances before a weather map, he provides weather forecasts for RAF pilots. He has also produced in-depth features on climate change. He talks to Andrew Keener about his professional career and musical journeys.
