29 September 2025
It gives me great sadness to announce that Martin Neary, a Vice-President of Putney Music, died on Saturday 27 September 2025.
Martin first came to Putney Music as a guest speaker in September 1997 when he spoke about his life including his time as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey. This meeting was just a week after the funeral of Princess Diana. He was highly involved with the choice of music and conducted the choir for the ceremony.
He was invited to be a Vice-President in 2014 and became very active member. In the eleven years of his tenure, he was involved in 15 meetings including several discussions with our President, David Cairns. He also interviewed his own daughter, Alice, who is a renowned cellist. His last talk in March last year was with Mike Brearley, the clarinettist and former English cricket captain who was also a close friend.
His involvement in Putney Music will be greatly missed and we send our condolences to his family.
Win Carnall, Chair, Putney Music
