Stephen Walsh (16 March)
We close the season with a second distinguished biographer and critic. Stephen Walsh was born in Chipping Norton and educated at Kingston Grammar School, St Paul’s School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was a choral exhibitioner and close friend of Martin Neary (then the Caius organ scholar), his interviewer this evening. He has worked as a music critic for The Times, the Daily Telegraph and the Observer.
From 1976 to 2013 he taught music at Cardiff University, and is now an Emeritus Professor of that institution. He has written acclaimed biographies of Stravinsky and Mussorgsky. His latest biography, Debussy, a Painter in Sound, has won particular praise, and copies will be on sale this evening. When not writing, he loves walking, swimming in the River Monnow and playing chess when he can find an opponent.
