canningHugh Canning (6 February)

Hugh Canning was born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire and studied Modern Languages at Pembroke College, Oxford. Classical music was always a first priority - he sang in the College Choir and played the viola until he had the chance to hear professionals at work - and began his career as a journalist, writing for the University publication, Cherwell and Isis.

During a post-grad diploma course in Theatre Studies, he contributed concert and opera reviews to the Western Mail and after moving to London worked for The Guardian as a freelance critic from 1983 - 89. Since 1989 he has written a weekly column for The Sunday Times. He is also a member of Opera magazine's orchestral board. His job is also his principal hobby.
